Mid Penn Bank recently announced that its Trust Department awarded a total of $114,350 to 58 students pursuing post-secondary education.

The recipients included 27 students who graduated in 2017 from Millersburg Area High School and Upper Dauphin Area High School. Scholarships also were awarded to 31 college students, all prior graduates of Millersburg and Upper Dauphin. The scholarships came from trusts established by northern Dauphin County residents under their wills.

The Allen F. Gilbert Trust Scholarship awarded $15,000 in scholarships to 2017 Millersburg Area High School graduates and $5,000 to prior graduates. Scholarship requirements include residency in Millersburg Borough or Upper Paxton Township for at least the prior two years, financial need and academic achievement placing the students in the top one-third of their class.

The Williamson Family Educational Trust awarded $23,400 in educational scholarships to 2017 Millersburg Area High School graduates and $23,750 to prior graduates. The Williamson Family requested that scholarship awards be given to those students who were pursuing an education in the medical field. The family hopes that these graduates return to upper Dauphin County to provide suitable health care for the residents of the county.

The Harold N. and Thelma G. Lenker Millersburg Community Trust awarded $22,100 in scholarships to 2017 Millersburg Area High School graduates. Scholarship requirements include highest financial assistance need and highest grade point average. This scholarship is not renewable to former graduates.

The Anna Mae Forney Scholarship Trust awarded $12,600 to 2017 Upper Dauphin Area High School graduates and $12,500 to prior graduates of the school. Scholarship requirements include residence within the Borough of Lykens, demonstrated academic excellence, and the ability to lead and succeed.

All four trusts were established by northern Dauphin County residents who wanted to provide educational opportunities to graduates within their communities.
